If you upgrade you will need to ship the latest version of the filechk.dll and replace your current License Controller - the two need to be matched together. You will need to support older clients/products using the License Controller for the appropriate version i.e. V3.5 Contoller with V3.5 produced filechk.dll.

SDK - Highly recommended update
It includes the following new features:
1. Programs are locked to the hard drive that contains the license table with a secondary mechanism. This means it is much more difficult to steal copies of PRO-Tector programs. Copying an entire hard drive, byte by byte, will yield a copy that does not work. This is in addition to the PnF Patent Pending protection in previous versions.
2. The license table is encrypted to a higher degree. This makes altering the license table much more difficult.
3. The license table is located on the drive which contains Windows. This means that customers with read/write errors or locking up, should now work correctly for those with unusual drive arrangements and virtual drives. The license manager and 4.2 uses a **new service**.
For a 4.2 protected program to work, the **new service must be installed**.
The new service is backwards compatible with older versions of the product. To upgrade to 4.2, the following files must be installed:
-The new service
-The new astdll.dll
-The new ntdll.dll
-The new license manager (optional)
*** A new custom dll created by the 4.2 SDK ***
This requires your action to create a new DLL using the V4.2 License Controller.
SPECIAL NOTES:

Before END USERS install anything protected by 4.2, they **MUST deactivate** the current version of the product and return the license to the server. Failure to do this may result in loss of the license. 4.2 requires a new service. The old service **must be stopped and removed** before the new product is installed.
V4.1 SDK - Highly recommended update
-This version is a major upgrade in functionality. It must replace the previous version and cannot be mixed with older versions.
-New files need to be created and shipped with this release to your end user.
-Totally new hosted activation portal and interface for your control of your end user.
-Registration option and VMWare blocking.
-We continue to add small improvements in usability to the License Manager and Controller.
-This version also has some further security additions.
-Multi-lingual End User portion

Please ensure you download the correct version as your activation code will not work with the wrong one - you can download and try PRO if you wish it will time out in 30 days. Setup rather than MSI files are also available if you have issues with MSI files, email us for details.
Warning: Before you install these updates ensure you uninstall the older version AND reboot then re-install. If you have a problem check that the AST service has been stopped.
PRO-Tector™ offers customers a high value for their investment. There are 2 main releases per year (Winter and Summer Release) and 2 service release versions.
A main release adds new features and updates to changes in operating systems. It should not be underestimated, what side effects a Windows Service Pack or just a new version of the Terminal Server can have to licensing and software copy protection solutions. All users with an update subscription get the main release for free but every customer can individually decide to buy an update. You can even skip updates and pay just the price for the latest update. Customers, who have bought a version within the last 30 days before a main release get the release free.
Service releases include bug fixes and minor improvements. They are free for users who bought the latest main release.
